The fare zones were established by a specialized agency when Mobilis was created, in accordance with certain rules that are also applied in other fare networks in Switzerland.

Generally, these areas are about 5 km in diameter, but they may also correspond to municipal boundaries, built-up area boundaries, or natural boundaries such as rivers.

In general, zones are not modified when companies change their transportation services or when municipalities merge.

To account for the gradient and the more direct route of these lines compared to public transportation lines that use road infrastructure, the zone boundaries are reduced for sections of rack-and-pinion railways and funiculars (in the national fare schedule, the mileage for these sections is also increased)

Mobilis has more than 150 fare zones; however, starting with 12 zones for passes and 15 zones for tickets and day passes, all zones are available to customers.
