In 2022, public transport celebrates 175 years of railroads in Switzerland. The first passenger train line was inaugurated on August 9, 1847, between Zurich and Baden. Since then, the railways have played a key role in the country's economic and social development. To mark the occasion, the public transport industry is organizing a variety of public events in five regions of the country, including the weekend of October 1 and 2 in French-speaking Switzerland.
The success story of public transport began with the train. For decades, this means of transport has been an example of the close cooperation between the entire industry, and of the high quality of our nationwide transport offering - not only trains, but also buses, streetcars, boats, mountain railways and ski lifts.
Without our customers, this success would not have been possible. The festivities planned to mark the 175th anniversary of the railroads are designed to thank all those who use public transport. Public events are being organized in five regions, spread over five weekends throughout the year:
- North region: May 21-22, 2022
- Southeast region: June 11-12, 2022
- Center region: September 3-4, 2022
- Western region: October 1-2, 2022
- Central Switzerland/Tessin region: October 22-23, 2022
During these weekends, a multitude of activities are offered in the region concerned. The aim is to enable you to experience the world of public transport in all its facets.
In addition to the regional festivities, on August 9, 2022, 175 years after the "Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn" went into service according to the timetable, an official UTP ceremony was held, attended by representatives of the public transport industry and guests from politics and business, including Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga.
